LASIK is one of the most consequential decisions a patient makes in a lifetime of eye health. Unlike a routine doctor’s visit to update a corrective lens prescription or replace a pair of glasses, this is surgery performed on your eye — permanent, precise, and irreversible. Yet a surprising number of people approach it the way they approach any other purchase: they sort by price and choose the lowest number. At Las Vegas Eye Institute, we work with patients who deserve an honest picture of what that choice often leads to — and what to prioritize instead.
Why “Cheap LASIK” Ads Are So Tempting — And So Misleading
We understand the appeal. For anyone living with myopia, near-sightedness, or astigmatism — spending money each year on contact lenses, lens solutions, and glasses — seeing an ad for $299-per-eye LASIK feels like a real answer. The advertising is designed to create exactly that reaction. It works.
But the fine print almost always tells a different story. Low-price LASIK advertising relies heavily on bait-and-switch tactics: prices that apply only to the mildest prescriptions treated with outdated technology, or clinics that quote one number and layer on costs for every add-on your eye actually needs. Consumer protection agencies and state attorneys general have taken action against misleading LASIK advertising for exactly this reason. The number in the ad exists to get you through the clinic door — not to reflect what your eye surgery will actually cost. In2026 it is unlikely that you would really want a LASIK flap created with a blade and yet that is likely the only technology that price would include as the cost to the clinic to create a flap with a laser is typically 150 dollars per eye and that is not including the cost of the $300,000 laser used to make the flap. A microkeratome blade on the other hand can cost as little as 20 dollars and one blade can actually be used on BOTH eyes. We don’t even own a blade to create a LASIK flap at Las Vegas Eye Institute so you can rest assured one will never come close to your eye at our practice.
What LASIK Pricing Actually Includes
A complete, all-inclusive LASIK quote should cover pre-operative diagnostics — including corneal topography, corneal tomography, OCT LASER Analysis of your corneal epithelium, and wavefront testing — the surgeon’s fee, the laser platform, facility costs, post-operative care, and an enhancement policy if a touch-up is needed within the defined period. When a clinic advertises a number that does not reflect all of these components, something has been removed from the equation.
The national average for all-laser, wavefront-guided LASIK currently ranges from $2,000 to $3,000 per eye. A price dramatically below that range should prompt one important question: what has been cut? Older laser technology, limited post-operative care, or a surgeon with less experience in refractive surgery can all reduce cost — and each introduces real risk for the individual patient. In comparison, at Las Vegas Eye Institute we use the latest Alcon EX500 laser with Wavelight Plus, Contoura, and Wavefront optimized treatment modes to deliver the best and most customized treatments specific to your individual eyes and your visual demands. All postoperative care is included for one year and enhancements are also included for one year. Most importantly our surgeon, Matthew Swanic MD has done thousands of LASIK, PRK, and cataract cases across many different platforms after completing his Residency at Tufts Medical Center and more importantly his Cornea and Refractive surgery Fellowship at the UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute. Not only is he highly experienced and incredibly well trained on the best LASERs in the world, but he is also passionate about refractive surgery. He is so passionate about LASER vision correction that he has had it on his own eyes, he has performed it on both his brother and sister, and several members of our office staff.
Affordability does not require settling for a discount procedure. A health savings account or flexible savings account can make quality LASIK accessible, and financing options allow patients to spread the investment over time without compromising on the result. Planning for LASIK with your long-term visual acuity in mind is a smarter financial decision than optimizing for the lowest upfront price.
What Patients Who Chose the Cheapest Option Regret Most
Patient satisfaction research in ophthalmology points consistently to the same patterns when price drives the choice. The most common regrets include persistent dry eye that was not adequately evaluated before surgery, visual disturbances — halos, starbursts, and reduced visual perception in low-light conditions — that affect everyday life, under-correction that required a second procedure not covered by the original quote, and being upsold during the process after arriving for the advertised price. This will not happen at our office. Our price may move up with inflation, but we have the same price for all of our LASER vision correction procedures. The only procedures that would have a different price would be evo ICL procedures, or refractive lens exchange.
There is also a financial irony that is worth naming directly. Patients who experience complications or need enhancements that fall outside their original discount package often spend more in corrective procedures than a quality LASIK procedure would have cost from the start. What began as money-saving decision-making can become a significant expense, layered on top of the emotional cost of managing an outcome that fell short. More importantly our experience has almost universally been that low cost LASIK practices with inadequately trained surgeons are actually not skilled enough to fix a complication. And in Las Vegas those patients almost all end up in the hands of Dr. Swanic because we are known to not only have the best technology but also the training to use it to correct other people’s mistakes.

Red Flags That a LASIK Deal Is Too Good to Be True
When evaluating any LASIK clinic, these are concrete warning signs that should give you pause:
- Low price one-size-fits-all pricing that does not account for prescription complexity, astigmatism, or individual anatomy
- No pre-operative corneal topography or comprehensive eye evaluation before a price is quoted
- High-volume, assembly-line clinic environments where personalization is absent
- Pressure to book same-day — a reputable surgeon respects that this is a permanent choice
- No named, board-certified surgeon featured in the practice’s materials
- Outdated laser technology used as a primary cost-reduction strategy
- No discussion of candidacy disqualifiers — a practice committed to accuracy and precision will tell you when LASIK is not right for your eye
A clinic willing to cut corners on evaluation and planning is not likely to deliver greater precision during the procedure itself. The absence of these standards is its own form of risk disclosure.
What to Prioritize Instead of Price
When your long-term health, visual acuity, and quality of life are on the line, the right question is not “How cheap can I get this?” but “What gives my eyes the best possible result?”
Surgeon credentials and experience. Don’t just look for a “board-certified ophthalmologist” because the reality is that pretty much every ophthalmologist in the country is board certified. Board Certification has almost nothing to do with refractive surgery. It focuses primarily on eye diseases such as cataract surgery and glaucoma. What you really want is a surgeon with fellowship training in cornea and refractive surgery. Dr. Swanic completed his fellowship at UCLA Jules Stein Eye Institute and has continued to perfect his skills with the most advanced equipment over the last 15 years. You also want a surgeon with a documented history of successful procedures. In medicine, experience has a direct relationship to outcome. Dr. Swanic has performed LASIK surgery thousands of times and you can find countless reviews online of our very happy patients. Also look at who they do LASIK on. Dr. Swanic has performed LASIK on professional athletes, pilots, optometrists, police officers, firefighters, and many of Las Vegas top medical doctors. These people often have inside knowledge of the field and they come to see us because of our reputation and often for work performed on people they know.
Laser technology. Modern femtosecond laser systems and wavefront-guided excimer laser treatment produce meaningfully better results than older platforms. The laser your surgeon uses directly affects the accuracy and precision of what happens to your eye. We are constantly moving forward with LASER technology. Our most recent addition is Alcon Wavelight Plus, ray-traced, LASIK that maps your cornea, performs wavefront testing, and measures the length of your eye to the fovea of your macula so that all the light rays can come to that point to provide exceptional visual quality. However, not all patients are good candidates for the ray tracing technology so we also offer its predecessor called Contoura Vision when a topography guided treatment is more appropriate. Lastly we still offer Wavefort optimized treatmetn that Dr. Swanic personally nomogram adjusts to provide the very best result when that is the best option.
Personalization. No two eyes are identical. Your corneal topography, prescription, and individual anatomy should all inform your treatment plan. A LASIK procedure that treats every patient identically is not delivering the level of care the surgery requires.
Comprehensive care before and after. The procedure is one part of the process. Pre-operative evaluation, post-operative visits, and a clear enhancement policy are all part of what you are investing in when you choose a LASIK provider. You will notice if you receive a consult at our office that it is not similar to that of other practices. We measure so many parts of your eye that many candidates are surprised how much data collect before we even have any discussion of what the best procedure will be.
How to Evaluate a LASIK Surgeon and Clinic
Schedule consultations at two or three clinics before making any choice. A thorough pre-LASIK evaluation — including a full eye exam — should always be completed before a specific price is quoted for your procedure. Come to each consultation prepared with direct questions:
- What laser platform do you use, and why?
- Is corneal topography included in my evaluation?
- What is your enhancement rate, and what does your enhancement policy cover?
- Who manages my post-operative doctor’s visits?
- How do you address patients who experience dry eye after surgery?
Notice how the clinic responds. A surgeon who is confident in their results and committed to patient care will welcome every question. Impatience or dismissiveness with your concerns is itself a red flag.
Making a Decision You Will Live With
LASIK performed by a skilled surgeon with the right technology reliably delivers outcomes that change lives. Patients move through everyday life free from corrective lens dependence — no glasses, no contact lens discomfort, no hunting for their prescription before the day has started. The gratitude we consistently hear from Las Vegas Eye Institute patients who made a thoughtful, well-researched choice reflects what this procedure can genuinely deliver.
The goal is not to spend the most. The goal is to make a sound investment in an outcome your eyes deserve. Treat this decision like the permanent one it is — choose your surgeon carefully, ask every question that matters to you, and trust a practice that recognizes you as an individual, not a volume number.
